PaySauce makes your pay day even easier by ensuring that your staff and the IRD get paid the right amount at the right time. For all customers on our Standard or Premium plans, the payments can be set up to happen automatically with one of our available payment types. This removes the need for you to transfer money separately to staff, to the IRD or to PaySauce (for the fees). Regardless of which payment type you choose, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that once you’ve closed the pays, we’ve taken care of everything else for you. There’s also no additional costs for the bank transactions - they’re all covered in your subscription price. PaySauce fees are also included in the payments so you don’t need to worry about managing your subscription costs separately.
In this article, we cover everything you need to know about payment types for your payroll including bank integrations, processing times, and how funds are transferred between employers, employees, and other parties like the IRD. We explain the different options available and how to set them up. We have a range of payment methods that you can choose from depending on who you bank with, and while they all ensure that everyone gets paid, there are some differences in how they work.
Payment types
The payment types described here all allow funds to be automatically deducted from your chosen bank account and sent to all required payees, including employees, IRD and any deductions that need to be sent to a third party.
Direct
Direct payment types are the preferred option for most of our customers. There are no processing limits, funds are deducted on pay day and you can process your pays even on public holidays and weekends. Your employees’ wages don’t have to go through PaySauce’s bank accounts first before they get paid.
If you bank with ANZ, ASB, BNZ or Westpac, we recommend you use our direct banking method.
You can read more about using the Direct payment type here.
Direct Debit
This payment type can also be known as ‘Holding’. Once your pay is closed, we will direct debit the total amount (including PAYE and processing fees) from your nominated account and hold it for two business days before making payments to all the payees.
You can read more about using Direct Debit here.
Akahu
Akahu is New Zealand’s open finance platform that connects New Zealand banks to trusted services like PaySauce, making it easy to link your bank account. You won’t need to fill in any paper forms, making it really easy to get started. Westpac really liked what they are doing - so much so, they invested $1.4m into them!
You can read more about using Akahu here.
ASB API
If you are an ASB customer with a Fastnet Classic account, you can link your PaySauce accounts directly to ASB through the bank's API. This provides a secure, automated payment solution. Note: If you have a Fastnet Business account, you'll need to use the Direct payment type instead.
You can read more about using ASB API here.

Payment Processing
Payment processing can vary depending on your bank and your payees' banks. We've provided information below to help you understand how payments flow from PaySauce through different banking systems.
Here's what you need to know about payment processing
With a Direct payment type, you can pay staff on any day of the year, including weekends and public holidays.
With Indirect payment types, you can pay your staff on business days (Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays).
With Indirect payment types, PaySauce will release the funds to your staff as soon as it has identified and received cleared funds from you. Not all banks process in a timely manner which can result in delays to PaySauce receiving the funds.
Wherever possible, you should close your pay before 5pm to ensure same-day bank processing. If you bank with Rabobank, you should aim to close your pay before midday to ensure PaySauce receives the funds to pay your staff. While some payments may process after this time, we recommend closing earlier since PaySauce support is only available Monday–Friday 8am–5.30pm if you need assistance.
We process payments regularly throughout the day. For customers using a direct payment type, staff typically receive their payments within one to two hours.
It's crucial to have sufficient funds in your account on pay day—if there isn't enough money available, the payment will be dishonored and your staff won't be paid.
You can use the same bank account and payment type across multiple PaySauce accounts—for example, if you manage several companies with different IRD numbers but share a single bank account.
Processing Times
Your payment type determines when PaySauce releases your payment and how long your bank takes to process it (both internally and to other banks). Check your specific payment type below for estimated processing times.
Dishonoured, rejected or failed payments
If your payment is dishonored (not processed by your bank), check your payment type below for next steps. The follow-up process varies by bank and payment type, based on the information they share with us.
Switching payment types
If you need to switch payment types, please email [email protected] so we can assist you. If you are an employer, you will need support from our team to change payment types.
If you are a bureau with access to an employer account, you can change payment types for your clients if the method has already been approved and set up.
